ROS Melodic on Slackware 14.2 – adventure continues!

So yesterday I wanted to post my notes from around October on how to install ROS Melodic on a Slackware 64bit system – yes, I’m boring, but honestly I like compiling ROS. It’s like an unhealthy, nerve-wrecking, time-consuming addiction that makes you smile in the end just for this one minute and it’s all worth it. Kinda like golf.

Bloggish-style remarks on what have I done

And so I sat down with my custom .patches and tried to make a fresh copy, just to be sure. And … error? Hey, it worked just a bit ago, what the?!

Why don’t I have rostest? It’s a comm packages, it’s been there … like… forever?

Sorry for the long output, but it’s there – whole ros_comm is out and I suspect I know why. For 95% – the .tar.gzs all have differently named directories inside, possibly without the version.

Yeap. So the wstool is lost at the stage of renaming the directories. I had some troubles with wstool before and always wanted to … well… skip it. So here is my idea: make a simple bash script that:

downloads a .tar.gz
unpacks it
moves whatever is inside into a src/sub/sub/name directory
... profit$$$ ?

Ok, without that last part. So after couple of minutes I disassembled .rosinstall file and wget’ed everything using:

and that's it. After a minute you will have a src/ directory ready. Use it cautiously, of course, it's pretty much as barebone as a nitro-powered 20$ plastic chainsaw. But it does not care about directory names, so it actually works.

Could I have used a more simpler regexp and remove the versions instead? Yes, it would be more precise, but I wanted a hammer on this one - I don't know what kind of a fix Github will use and in case they break the naming convention once again - I'm ready.

Patching

The current .patch for Slackware includes a couple of things:
- first sketch of lib64-only for 64bit-pure linux:
- ability to compile on older gcc (-std=c++0x)
- working search for eigen3

So: 64bit
That's done using catkins own ${CATKIN_PACKAGE_LIB_DESTINATION} - I'm amazed some projects have a hardcoded lib directory, when this is quite clearly the way to go. Or maybe I'm gravely mistaken and this variable sits there just to look pretty.

And that's all - those 3 things are the only recurring theme in my mods since about a year or two. Now a word about the first thing in more detail:

rviz, rqt and plugins

There is one more un-removeable hardcoded path in plugins - lib/ in plugin section. "ln -s lib64 lib" is still needed.
The reason is a bad path to (for example) lib/librviz_default_plugin.so in plugin.xml file

The class required for this view controller, 'rviz/Orbit', could not be loaded.
Error:
Could not find library corresponding to plugin rviz/Orbit. Make sure the plugin description XML file has the correct name of the library and that the library actually exists.

I still didn't get around it, sorry. What's the fallout? This will get pretty boring pretty soon:
